Cannabis for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate, a gland just below the bladder that surrounds the urethra in the male reproductive system. Prostate cancers are usually slow-growing, and do not usually affect most males until they are over 50. There are few initial signs, but as the cancerous cells progress, common symptoms include pain or difficulty urinating, blood in the urine, or pain in the pelvis or back. Globally, prostate cancer is the second-most common cancer and the fifth-leading cause of cancer-related death in men.

Research has shown that prostate cancer cells have higher levels of expression of both CB1 and CB2 receptors than normal cells. This suggests that both THC and CBD may be useful in treating prostate cancer, as they “discourage the formation of tumor blood vessels (angiogenesis) needed by prostate cancer tumors to nourish themselves.”
