Stomach ulcers, also known as gastric ulcers, are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach. Stomach ulcers occur when the mucus that protects your stomach from digestive juices reduces. Common symptoms include indigestion, heartburn, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting and weight loss. Most stomach ulcers are the result of long-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen, or an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
Some studies have shown that people with cannabis use disorder (CUD) may have an increased chance of becoming hospitalized due to a peptic ulcer disease. However, cannabinoids’ potential anti-inflammatory effects and ability to reduce or replace NSAID intake may be useful aspects for those with peptic ulcers. CBD and CBD oil can decrease gastric acid and increase blood flow to the lining of the stomach, although whether this can directly help with stomach ulcers remains to be seen.
